Basalt MIDI Generator

Basalt is one of MIDI Maker’s experimental palettes, organised as homorhythm. The chords and the bass strike as one block: unison columns with carved air between them, each column topped with a stab edge over a bowed-metal body.

What to listen for: Chords and bass strike together as heavy stone blocks with silence between them, while a single melody threads through the gaps they leave.

Roll a basalt track

Basalt is included with the Pro and Studio plans; the free plan covers five genres. See pricing.

How the engine writes basalt

The single melody is the complement — it plays only where the columns rest, so the two textures interlock without colliding. At 96 BPM the feel is deliberate and granitic, and the harmony moves in slow root motion of fourths and fifths: pillars rather than progressions. A soft kit strikes only with the block — a void kick under the columns, a low tom under the heaviest, a breath of dust once a phrase — and rests when they rest.

From a roll to your DAW

A roll defaults to 96 BPM (every preset and tempo is editable before and after generating) and plays back in the browser through the studio's own synths. When you like a take, export it as whole-track or per-instrument MIDI, or as WAV/MP3 audio — the drum part uses General MIDI numbering, so it lands correctly on any drum plugin. There are step-by-step import guides for Ableton Live, FL Studio and Logic Pro.
